What does the way someone depicts something else say, or doesn’t say, about the creator?
When the artist swallows their image, they delve deeper into the rarely explored realm of embodied knowledge in the relationship between the creator and their image of someone else.
Karel Tuytschaever investigates the role the creator’s physicality plays in creating a visual representation of someone else. He does this by reciprocally distilling his hybrid artistry and making his teaching method as a cross-disciplinary teaching artist at the Antwerp Schools of Arts explicit.
As a theater and filmmaker, he explores new ways to genuinely capture bodies in a 2D image, using lens-based media and his body as a creator as equal instruments. In his teaching method, he links the various disciplines to bodily awareness and emphasizes how the physicality of artists in training can be a driving force in their vision and skill development.
