A Mass on the Move
Benjamin Vandewalle, Johannes Bellinkx
Description
It’s been said many times before: astronauts no longer feel the same after seeing Earth as a tiny, fragile blob in the vast cosmos. Inspired by their interest in the perception of scale, Benjamin Vandewalle and Johannes Bellinkx launched the project “A Mass on the Move” in 2025, aiming for a similar (overview) effect by orchestrating a movement performed simultaneously by 1,000 people in the city streets. Small, simple actions repeated 1,000 times suddenly acquire a monumental quality. A collaborative mass can achieve something beyond the sum of its parts, as, for example, during the Catalan ritual of enormous human towers. The movement initiated by the creators will last for several days, each time being picked up and carried by different hands. It’s not about the grand gesture, but about the shared experience of our vulnerability and insignificance on a grand scale.
