Biography
With her performative installations, Spanish-Belgian Edurne Rubio explores the intersection of visual art, performing arts, and audiovisual work. Initially, she created visual work, short videos, and small performances. This hybrid work ended up at KWP, and in 2013, Rubio announced her intention to create her first performance in the black box. She wanted to tell the story of her father and his brothers, who, as amateur cavers in the 1980s and 1990s, discovered several important caves. At the same time, these caves symbolized the underground resistance against the dictatorship of the time.
This exciting undertaking resulted in the performance Light Years Away (2014), a gem that generates new data with each performance. Rubio subsequently made the film Ojo Guarana and created “situation projects” at the request of both Conde Duque and GC Elzenhof. In 2021, she presented the large-scale production A Nublo together with Spanish artist Maria Jerez, in which they investigate how natural phenomena can be recreated within the theatre.

Tinieblas is a collection of stories about people who become lost.
A polyphonic narrative that recreates real events, or perhaps situations that have only ever existed in the collective imagination: legends, tales, rumours… We live on a continent that has been entirely mapped. Forest paths are signposted, and routes carefully described in guidebooks. Connected to thousands of satellites orbiting the planet, we search for our way without looking at the world around us.
Where and how can we become lost today? In the theatre?
Tinieblas is a performance in which the audience becomes lost, found, and lost again. The theatre becomes the centre of a territory, a place with its own geographic coordinates. At the same time, the spectators form a single body in motion, like a murmuration of starlings.
It is a sensory experience that constantly holds the tension between inside and outside, between the slow pace of a walking human and the vertiginous speed of the imagination, capable of teleporting us in an instant.
