Daems Van Remoortere

Biography

Daems Van Remoortere is the collaborative practice of Lena Daems (born 1988) and Frederik Van Remoortere (born 1986). At the intersection of visual art, performance, and spatial intervention, the duo develops an oeuvre that moves between autonomous sculptural work and multimedia installations in public spaces.

Their practice is rooted in a poetic exploration of natural phenomena and the patterns of human behavior that relate to them. With large-scale, kinetic sculptures and carefully orchestrated environments, Daems Van Remoortere make visible the invisible forces that shape our lives, often exposing a silent tension between presence and absence.

Drawing on insights from physics, astronomy, and mathematics, their works demonstrate a deep fascination with systems, while simultaneously subtly confronting the audience with the uncomfortable reality of our impact on the world and on ourselves. The audience is often invited as co-actors, whose movements and choices influence the flow of the work.

Daems Van Remoortere thus create spaces for reflection, where poetic imagination merges seamlessly with mechanical precision.

In residentie Hortus Temporis

Hortus Temporis is an artistic research project by Daems Van Remoortere, focusing on the creation of a kinetic bio-art sculpture that functions as a living, moving island while simultaneously collecting ecological data. The project consists of two complementary components: the Mothership Island installation, a floating sculpture on which plants grow in harmony with natural and cosmic movements, and Chrono Flora, a museum-like installation in which the collected data artificially reconstructs the island’s natural conditions. This creates a dialogue between nature and technology that not only visualizes the fragile balance of ecosystems but also raises fundamental questions about their future in times of climate change.
